  • Is there a difference between Coconut Palm Sugar and Coconut Sugar?

    No, Coconut Palm Sugar and Coconut Sugar both come from the blossom of the coconut palm tree.

  • Does coconut sugar taste like coconuts?

    No.  Madhava Organic Coconut Sugar does not taste like coconuts.  It comes from the nectar of coconut tree blossoms.  Madhava Blonde Coconut Sugar has a mild and sweet flavor and can easily replace sugar in recipes and Madhava Coconut Sugar has a caramelized maple flavor and can replace brown sugar in recipes.

  • Where does coconut sugar fall on the Glycemic Index?

    Coconut sugar has a medium glycemic index, similar to table sugar. What makes coconut sugar superior is that it is unrefined and has naturally occurring nutrients not found in table sugar.

  • Is coconut sugar more nutritious than cane sugar?

    Coconut sugar has a nutritional content that is richer than sugar beets or cane sugar, and has naturally occurring nutrients, including magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, B vitamins and amino acids (including glutamine).  Unlike beet/cane sugar, nothing is removed, added or altered in the production of coconut sugar.

  • How is coconut sugar made?

    Madhava Organic Coconut Sugar is grown and harvested sustainably in Indonesia. It is an organic, unrefined sweetener that is derived from the nectar of coconut palm tree blossoms, or buds. The nectar is boiled to evaporate the water, and the remaining concentrated nectar is crystallized into sugar.

  • How do I replace Organic Coconut Sugar for beet/cane sugar in my recipes?

    Organic Coconut Sugar is used as a one-to-one alternative to beet or cane sugar. Madhava Original Organic Coconut Sugar has a caramelized maple flavor that is ideal for replacing brown sugar in recipes; and Organic Blonde Coconut Sugar has a mild and sweet flavor and is an easy substitute for white sugar.

  • Does coconut sugar come from the coconut fruit?

    No.  Coconut sugar is derived from the nectar of coconut palm tree blossoms, or buds and not from the coconut fruit.

  • Is the production of Organic Coconut Sugar sustainable?

    Yes. Madhava Organic Coconut Sugar is harvested from the cocos nucifera tree, while palm oil and hearts of palm are harvested from the palmyra tree. The palmyra tree is harvested every 8-9 years by destroying the plant.  The cocos nucifera, used for the production of coconut sugar, can continually produce for 80-90 years making coconut sugar a great, sustainable sugar.
